Nice point there!! just wanted to add something. Network measurement are Megabites while the measures we are using in computers locally are megabytes, which is 8 times more than megabites, that means, a network working at 100 mbps means it can handle 12.5 megabytes per second, so, if you open that 40 mb file on a 100 mbps network, you are actually taking 2,5 seconds to open just that file. Said so, actually most networks are at least 1000 mbps, which are 125 megabytes per second. So your point is even more clear now. Imagine if we are now talking about a 500 mb exr, now you can kill yourself if you are on a slow network, hahaha

Hugo and Ian. The issues with the reduction of the opinion of VFX is the "democratization" of VFX. All those DVD extras and BTS videos have unraveled teh mystique of VFX and thusly made everyone into a armchair critic. They have now seen one or two breakdowns, opened up Blender, and think that they are an expert. Not an expert in creating them, as that would educate them into knowing how hard it is, but an expert in seeing the trick. Now that so many uneducated know the trick, its "computers" Once they see something fantastical or "impossible" they know that someone did it on a computer just like playing a Playstation game. So if it is even a good effect it is now dismissed as being easy. Anyone can get Blender and make VFX now. Software is cheap, It can be made on a laptop. They think that that's the barrier and the barrier is gone. Not understanding the art, science and craft behind it. Doing things practically doesn't use software or look like a video game. So in their mind, that's the craftsmanship.... not some one sitting in front of a screen. Its a matter of perception. They perceived how easy it is, therefore it has no value and they want to poke holes. Even if a giant muppet Jabba the Hut Looks terrible to our eyes today, the fact that it had to be sculpted, cast in foam, painted and is tactile is something very few people can do, so it has a higher value in their minds. Even if a digital version of a CG creature still took just as much skill to sculpt, texture, animate.... and comp.... They still see it as the "computer" and therefore low skill made that.

Being one of the lucky few who got to see the NP sequence (original Golden Compass ending) it's a crime that it never got to be released in any form. So much time and effort went into it - truly stunning. Thanks for uploading the podcast :)

I'm sure everyone is sick of talking about it but... On the topic of the FX3, It's funny because I see a lot of people taking about why they used the FX3 and they sight all the reasons you mentioned. But personally, I believe it's mainly due to the super high second ISO of 12800. Something that's not really talked about much is the fact that even if you need to use lights or you want to use light to achieve a certain look, you only need to have a small kit with low wattage to fill the scene with light. Put another way: The Sony sensor is so "Sensitive" to light and that means, you don't have to use as much light to get a good look. I think this was crucial to the run and gun gorilla style filmmaking that Edwards likes. I'm sure the other factors you mentioned are important as well, but in the end, I think the sensitivity of the camera made a lot more sense than people give it credit for. The other thing is, you mention that since the camera was small it could be more inconspicuous. This is true but if you look at any of the behind the scenes, you'll see they had it fully rigged out one a gimbal mounted to a should rig. That along with a sound and lighting crew, it would have nullified this benefit. ;) Lastly, I just wanted to say that even though there are a lot of negative aspects to people thinking that the FX3 was the sole reason the movie looked to good, I think there is one very important benefit: It really shows that the you can make a movie with whatever camera you like. We are living in the golden age of cheap home cinema products. Now more than ever people have no excuse not to go out and bring their visions to life. I mean heck, if you wanted the exact same look, the VZ-E1 has the same sensor and only costs 2200$. Or use a Canon, Panasonic, Nikon, BlackMagic, etcetera. You could probably make a camera, sound and lighting kit that costs less than 3-4k now a days. Use it smartly and you can make a banger. My point is, the barrier to entry has been shattered now so there's no more excuses. :)

Seen that episode of the show form the 80's called Movie Makers on matte painting? they are saying exactly what you're saying about painting the feeling of the shot not actuality. Young guy being trained by Albert Whitlock saying you need to make blobs instead of detail. Also, hitchcock talking about Rope, and always finding that set dressers were trying to be interior designers when they should be writers. Making and dressing things because it all contributes to telling us who the characters are - oh, you mentioned Nolan. I'm out of here.

First of I want to congratulate you on the 3rd anniversary of the podcast! I've been listen and watching this since not that long ago but knew about you before finding the podcast, through the Before and Afters articles and Hugo's streams on Nuke. I really enjoy watching you guys talk because I feel like i'm part of these conversations, the shared opinions and some experiences. In this one specially with Hugo talking about video clubes being the norm and Blockbuster coming on the late 90's, and also the behind the scenes documentaries being one of the biggest reasons to be working in this industry. For me it was the behind the fxs of Empire Strikes Back, where it showed the history behind the FXs and the magic in movies and in particular children making movies with clay or household items. It meant not only that movies were made, but also that I could be making them. Then comes the reality of living in a third world country and the complications of having no budget, but we make what we can with what we have jajaja. Thank you guys for all your work!

The lighting and shadows on Keanu match up perfectly with the background footage, which is of the incredible elevator shaft model! Weeeee ^^ I love these retro episodes. Looking at petabytes worth of fluid sims is great and all, but these 20 to 30 year old films in my experience are much closer to the everyday VFX work and hold far more ideas on how to solve a shot than massive LED volumes and the latest and greatest in performance capture. What do you think about doing an episode on how the effects in a somewhat similar environment developed over the years? Thinking of the Batman films from 1989 till today or the Harry Potter series Great podcast, thank you so much for sharing these insights! Greetings from Berlin

Even the other day I was watching the new 4K Blu-ray of Star Wars Episode 1 and they removed the old documentaries and behind-the-scenes and replaced them with some generic marking BS.
